Contact the webmaster Our Affiliation With The BUWC/CBWC*While Bethel Baptist Church traces its origins to outreach efforts in the 1920's, our formal affiliation with the Baptist Union of Western Canada* (BUWC) did not occur until 1955 when 8 charter members made an application to the B.C. Convention of Baptist Churches, which is part of the BUWC. The BUWC is part of a larger family under the umbrella of Canadian Baptist Ministries, an association of conventions and unions across Canada that call themselves, Baptists.
(* - at the biennial BUWC Assembly in the Spring of 2007, the denomination made a decision to change its name from the Baptist Union of Western Canada to Canadian Baptists of Western Canada to better identify with our national connections under the umbrella of Canadian Baptist Ministries. We will continue to transition from BUWC to CBWC over the next year, until that time we will continue to use both names as an identification of our denominational affiliations.) Statement Of PurposeThe word "purpose" has become a kind of buzz word within Christian circles. In fact, I might even be infringing upon copyright protection just using the word 'purpose.' ;). It's good to have purpose, as long as you understand the purpose of having purpose, otherwise there is no purpose to having a purpose statement...As Pastor at Bethel, and simply as a Christ follower, I think about church life in North America and its constant pursuit of vision and purpose statements, and I am concerned that in our efforts to have such statements, we somehow 'miss the forest for the trees' as the old saying goes. Our pursuit of statements intended to inspire simply become words expressed on a page rather than passion lived out in the hearts and lives of people. Having said that, I applaud those churches that our able to make the connection between the two. I believe our purpose is clearly stated in Scripture: Go into the world, make disciples, baptize them and teach them. Here at Bethel Baptist Church we continue to seek God's will in terms of how we may specifically reach out to the community with the gospel of Jesus Christ, build up the people that are part of the church and equip them to go into the world and see God's Kingdom grow. The result is that we believe a simple statement of God's purpose for Bethel (which is a borrowed and altered phrase) says, "we (Bethel, Sechelt) endeavour to make more and better Christians in authentic Christian community." It's not our statement - it's one expressed by others and wonderfully captures the simplicity of why we exist as a church. Our desire is to see people come to faith in Christ (more Christians) and grow in their faith as well ('better' Christians), in an authentic environment that displays the message of the Gospel (authentic community.) Pillars of Ministry Priority. At Bethel, we seek to form our ministry efforts on 6 'pillars.' From these pillars, we see the church take shape and form its goals. They are: 1) Biblical Teaching and Preaching With a Purpose. 2) Authentic Worship. 3) Meaningful and Inspiring Fellowship. 4) Leadership Development. 5) Mobilizing Christians to Serve God and Others. 6) Effective Evangelism and Outreach. These pillars rest on a platform of prayer and serve to guide all our ministry efforts. Pastoral StaffPastor Al and Patricia
Senior Pastor: Pastor Al Grochowski contact Pastor Al Grochowski Pastor Al was born in Vancouver and did most of his growing up in Surrey, BC. At the age of 18 he came to faith in Jesus Christ. After spending the next 5 years in the retail world selling shoes and managing a shoe store (insert your own joke here), Al decided to go back to school and attended Northwest Baptist Theological College to obtain his Bachelors of Religious Education. Al "stayed in the saddle" until he completed his Masters of Divinity degree in 1996 and was ordained in 1997.. Al has served in the Baptist Union of Western Canada since the mid 1990's in various capacities, enjoying ministering in churches in Surrey, BC, Assiniboia, SK and now is privileged to call Sechelt home since being called to Pastor Bethel Baptist Church in February 2004. Al loves spending time with his family - beautiful wife Patricia, spunky daughter Rebecca, and always entertaining dog Newton. Games like Settlers of Catan and the sport of soccer top his list of hobbies... that and drinking a good cup of coffee whenever he can. Most of all, being able to proclaim God's Word to all he meets is the greatest privilege ever experienced. Associate Pastor of Family Life & Youth: Pastor Jeremy Keay
Contact Jeremy Jeremy, Buffy, Elijah, and Samuel (Eli and Sam) are a new addition to the Bethel community. If you're looking for spirited conversation, hair and style advice, or a continuation of the age old "Waffles vs. Pancakes" debate, this is the family for you. As our new Associate Pastor of Youth and Family Life, Jeremy brings with him a genuine enthusiasm for theology, community, and the thread of grace that knits the two together. If you get to know Jeremy, you will learn of his love of espresso, culinary technique, Mac OS X, The Colbert Report and his new Epiphone Sheraton II. A few times a week, you will find Jeremy on the beach at Snickett Park with his family, throwing rocks and making driftwood forts. Buffy is a part-time/in-home hair stylist, who somehow manages to wrangle a 4 year old and 2 1/2 a two year old (Eli and Sam) with the rest of her day. She is the smart, cute, energetic, thoughtful, and genuinely warm person, that Jeremy was lucky enough to marry over 11 years ago. Buffy & Jeremy
